CompTIA Security+ stood out as being a common denominator in the majority of the entry-level jobs. According to CompTIA, they describe it as:

CompTIA Security+: It is a worldwide certification that verifies the fundamental skills fundamental to executing core security functions and seeking an IT security career.

Exam Breakdown:

According to CompTIA, this security certification should be one of the first to be obtained. The course forms the vital proficiency expected of any cybersecurity role, and it is a perfect avenue to intermediate-level cybersecurity jobs. In addition, it introduces hands-on exercises in troubleshooting and provides participants to have critical thinking skills to:

  • Assess the company's status of their security structure and advise and resolve appropriate responses to security discrepancies.
  • Monitor and Secure hybrid environments, including cloud, mobile, and IoT.
  • Operate with an understanding of relevant laws and policies, including the foundations of governance, risk, and compliance
  • Identify, Analyze, and Respond to security matters and episodes.

The exam will consist of a maximum of 90 questions, including multiple-choice and performance-based questions. The test length is 90 minutes, and you will need a 750 or higher on a scale of 100-900. They recommend that you have CompTIA Network+ and two years of experience in IT administration with a security focus. Pearson Vue provides the exam via testing centers or online testing for $370.
